LP3 recording begins...
5 July 2006
Woo-hoo! Back in the studio! That's right kids, the third Sudden Moves album officially gets underway on Saturday (unofficially tomorrow, when I'll pop round to Matt's to do some scratch tracks on Pro-T**ls). As stated in the last update, we're recording at Jim Eno's Public Hi-Fi studio, here in Austin. The first 3 songs under the knife are tour favourite 'How Can People Wear That Stuff?' along with newcomers 'Sleepyhead' and, for want of a better title right now, "the Joe Jackson one..."
Free Austin show May 20th
2 May 2006
Wow - long time no update... Well first of all, a big thank you to everyone who came out to see us on our March US tour with The Wedding Present. It was great to play so many places and meet so many fans, old and new.
What of the future? Well, we're playing some shows around Austin - the next one being on May 20th (a Saturday!) at The Carousel Lounge. It's free, and The Carousel is a really cool place.
Throughtout May and June we'll be busy rehearsing up new material for album 3, which we start work on in July. So far we have three songs commited - "English Medicine", "Stars of the History Channel" and "How Can People Wear That Stuff?". All of which are in our current live set. The album will be recorded here in Austin with Mr Jim Eno at his recently completed Public Hi-Fi studio.
I've also got some photos and video from the tour which I will be adding to the web site just as soon as I get time...
Austin shows / new line-up for the tour
25 January 2006
We'll be playing at The Parish, Austin, TX on Thursday 9th February, along with Craig Ross and The Rite Flyers. We're also pretty sure we're playing Club De Ville (Austin) during SXSW (Friday 17th), as well as a day party on the 18th. More info as we know it.
Both Matt (bass) and Eric (keyboards) were unable to join us on our upcoming tour, so we've borrowed Eric Harvey for bass and Stephen Wettermark for keyboards.
Philadelphia date added
19 January 2006
Another date has been added to the March tour: Thursday 9th at Tritone in Philadephia, PA.
Happy New Year, happy new tour dates

2 Tallahassee, FL - Beta Bar
3 Atlanta, GA - The Earl
4 Chapel Hill, NC - Cat's Cradle

iTunes exclusive EP released
28 November 2005
Our new 4-song EP is now available for purchase from iTunes.
New EP / Hurricane benefit show
10 September 2005
It's been a busy time for the band, not that you'd know it from this web site.... sorry for the lack of updates. Here's what's been happening:
Just today we completed mastering our upcoming EP, "Ten Minute Moment Of Truth". The 4-song release will be available as an iTunes exclusive from November 1st. The EP was recorded in 3 days last month at Wire Studios, Austin by Stuart Sullivan, and co-produced and mixed by Jim Eno. The songs will probably be familiar to anyone who's seen our recent shows, and are the first Sudden Moves recordings to feature Matt Baab (bass) and David Evans (drums).
On the gig front, we will be playing a Hurricane Katrina benefit show at Emo's in Austin on Tuesday 20th Sept. We will be on at 10. There are quite a few bands playing which means short sets for all, so if you want to make sure you see us get there early. Following that we're playing with John Vanderslice and Portastatic at The Parish (Austin) on October 27th.
And for those who missed it when it aired, my recent solo appearance on Joe Belock's "Three Chord Monte" (WFMU) radio show can be found here. (Real Player required)
Upcoming shows
27 June 2005
Thanks to everyone who came out to see us (or came out to see Spoon but listened to us first) in both Dallas and Austin this weekend. It was really great to play in front of such huge and enthusiastic crowds! We're playing in Austin again in a couple of weeks, at Emo's (outside) with Mission Of Burma on 15th July and 2 weeks later (Saturday 30th) we do an in-store at End Of An Ear, Austin. A few days prior to that (Tuesday 26th), I will be appearing on 'Three Chord Monte' on New Jersey's WFMU radio.

Shows, shirts and shopping
5 June 2005
We had a great time supporting Spoon in Baton Rouge last week, and are looking forward to two more nights with them at the end of the month (see 'gigs'). We also have an in-store scheduled in Austin in July at the newly opened End Of An Ear - more info when the date is confirmed.
Meanwhile, if you can't make it out to the record shop, 'Shortly After Take-Off' is now available online via a few different sources: direct from 12XU records, Amazon.com, Other Music, as well as on iTunes any day now...
Record Release Show!
23 May 2005
Just a reminder: To celebrate tomorrow's release of 'Shortly After Take-Off' we are holding a record release party at Emo's, Austin on Thursday 26th May. Playing with us that night are: Britt Daniel, What Made Milwaukee Famous and The Dung Beatles. Doors are at 8pm, first band on at 9pm. Cover is $6. We hope to see you there!
Video shoot update

The video shoot went well yesterday (I think...). A few pics from our busy day.

New drummer / Video for Good Morning, Aston Martin
03 May 2005
We played the Pecan St. festival in Austin on Sunday, which also turned out to be our drummer Jimmy's last show. He has been replaced as of yesterday with David Evans. Sally citied Jimmy's departure as "95% musical differences, 5% beard". The new line-up are busy rehearsing for the record release show in 3 weeks time, while preparing for their debut video shoot this coming Saturday with director Daniel Isaac.
Record release party!
30 Apr 2005
We have confirmed the full line-up for our 'Shortly After Take-Off' album release party! We're very pleased to say that Britt Daniel, What Made Milwaukee Famous and The Dung Beatles will all be entertaining attendees to the Emo's show prior to us taking the stage to play 'Shortly After Take-Off' in its entirety. There will be new Sudden Moves t-shirts on sale, plus some special give-away items...
Another preview track released...
28 Apr 2005
With just under a month until 'Shortly After Take-Off', er, takes off, here is a chance to hear another song, Pane Of Glass. You can also pre-order the album from the 12XU online shop.
More Texas dates on the way
01 Apr 2005
We start off April with news of a few Texas live dates for y'all (that still doesn't sound right to me). Our record release show for 'Shortly After Take-Off' is taking place at Emo's Jr. on 26th May, two days after the album's launch so we'll have CDs, new t-shirt designs, etc. Then in late June we will be supporting Spoon on the Texas leg of their summer tour. The dates are: Fri 24th June at Gypsy Tea Room, Dallas and Sat 25th June at Stubb's, Austin. Freakin' Stubb's! It's gonna be great. I love BBQ!!
Austin action next week
08 Mar 2005
Just a reminder that you will have more than one opportunity to see us next week in Austin! We are playing one official SXSW gig (Friends, Saturday 19th, 11pm) and also a day party on Wednesday 16th at Ruta Maya, a coffee shop/venue on South Congress. The day party has been organised by our label, 12XU, and is FREE. No need for a SX badge as it's nothing to do with the festival, just a gig put together to give people a chance to see some bands in a more civilized atmosphere than the usual sticky-floored rock club. The action starts at 3pm, and we will be on at 5pm, followed by Pedro The Lion at 6!!
Then on the Thursday night (17th) we will be one of the 7000 bands taking part in the annual Guided By Voices Hoot Night at Emo's (outside). If you are not familiar with the concept, the deal is that each band gets to perform a couple of their favourite GBV songs. Our slot is at 11.40pm, and Chris' slot with Bedbug is 11.20.
Last gig reviewed
04 Mar 2005
We got a short but sweet review in the Austin American Statesman's XL last week. Read it here. We'd also like to thank everyone who came out to see us so late on a week night.
The new guy
04 Mar 2005
Just in time for our upcoming flurry of activity (March 16th-18th), we are really, really happy to announce our new guitar and keyboard player, Chris Hillen. Some of you may be familiar with him from his band Bedbug, in which he sings, so do not be surprised to see more 3-part harmonies at future Sudden Moves gigs. We would also like to wish our departing keyboardist Eric best of luck with impending fatherhood.
Album 2 cleared for a May landing
08 Feb 2005
We're delighted to announce that "Shortly After Take-Off" will be released on 24th May on 12XU records.
Good Morning, Aston Martin
02 Feb 2005
"Good Morning, Aston Martin," a song from the upcoming "Shortly After Take-Off" album, is now available for MP3 download! Click here to hear it...
Keyboardist/lead guitarist required (*position filled 04 Mar)
24 Jan 2005
As of March, Eric Friend will no longer be able to play keyboard/guitar for us, so we are looking for his replacement. The successful applicant should be capable of replicating all the keyboard and lead guitar bits on our records, as well as write suitably catchy parts for all those songs I've not yet written.
Feb/March gigs
24 Jan 2005
We're playing at Trophy's in Austin on 24th Feb, followed by an appearance at SXSW as part of the 12XU label show, which is this year happening at Friends (6th Street). It's on Saturday 19th. When the other bands have confirmed we will announce them here.
Next gig announced
19 Dec 2004
First of all, thanks to everyone who came out last night to see us play. There are a couple of photos here. Next gig: Emo's again on January the 8th, and it's free! We will be joined on bass (as we were on Saturday) by Matt Baab.
Emo's info
16 Dec 2004
We're on at 9pm on Saturday (Emo's - inside stage).
Austin gig update
3 Dec 2004
Our gig at Emo's has been moved to the inside stage. Toasty. Oh, and also, our new bass player went AWOL, so we've borrowed someone else (no names until it's confirmed). We're also borrowing Eric Friend on keyboards/2nd guitar for the upcoming local gigs. Eric has played with us for every full-band Austin gig so far (SXSW March 02 and 04), making him probably the most official unofficial 4th member we've ever had.Austin gig
15 Nov 2004
Our first non-SXSW Austin performance has been announced. Check the 'Gigs' section for details.
We got bass!
21 Oct 2004
The new Austin based Sudden Moves line-up is quickly taking shape. Latest addition is bass player Chris Grady. A guitar playing keyboard player is the next to be sought... We've got some applicants in mind, but if you have the requisite skills, it's not too late to get in touch.
New drummer announced!
16 Oct 2004
We're delighted to introduce our new drummer, the very talented Jimmy Anderson. Sally and Jimmy will be auditioning bass, guitar and keyboard players over the next few weeks, after which the new line-up will start working towards their first gig, no doubt in Austin, and hopefully sometime in December. To receive info of upcoming Sudden Moves gigs, join our emailing list.
Hunt for band members continues...
9 Oct 2004
Thanks to everyone who has contacted us recently about trying out for the new line-up - the response has been great. We will continue to accept applications and hold auditions until all the positions are filled, so keep 'em coming!

The following musicians are needed to form the new Sudden Moves line-up:
Drummer

Album 2 delayed, but US tour in 2005
14 July 2004
Following Sally's decision to relocate to Austin, TX this September, The Sudden Moves' second album has been put back to an early 2005 release. This is to allow Sally time to establish a new, Austin-based band who can then hit the road to tour the US when the album comes out.

BBC6 Bob Harris show
21 Mar 2004
Some pics from this morning's live session on BB6. We played 'Pane Of Glass' and 'Friend Of The City'. Very kind of the BBC to provide me with a microphone to match my t-shirt.

Austin update
20 Mar 2004
We're heading off to Red Eyed Fly shortly for our 10pm gig. Then tomorrow morning (around 5:30pm UK time) we will be playing live on Bob Harris's BBC6 show from Austin, TX. There'll be an interview and 2 acoustic songs performed by myself and Phil. You can listen live via the BBC6 web site.

We were back in the studio again this weekend. 'Shortly After Take-Off' song titles so far confirmed are:
Come & Get Me
Airport Song
Little Rock Star
Looks Like Trouble
My Heart's A Motorway
Pane Of Glass
Bad Weekend
Rear View Mirror
There are 7 other songs in the works, but their titles are up in the air so we don't wanna talk about it.
All the news that I can remember
09 Jan 2004
Somebody deleted our news blog. Hah. Wasn't me, honest...
Ok, let's see what I can remember...
We're playing SXSW
That's right. We're back in Austin, Texas in March - or at least two-fifths of us are. Phil and myself fly out on March 11, and once in Austin we'll borrow some local lads for bass and keyboard duties. The show (it's a show not a gig cos it's in America) is on Saturday 20th March. We're playing alongside some of our labelmates (Silkworm, Chris Brokaw, Britt Daniel, Joel RL Phelps and Consonant) at the 12XU label night. The venue: Red Eyed Fly on Red River, just off 6th Street.
Album 2 will be departing this year from terminal 4
We're currently in the studio putting the finishing touches (vocals, drums, guitars - that kinda stuff) to our upcoming album, 'Shortly After Take-Off'. The follow-up to Feb 02's 'Drive It Like You Stole It' will be released in September. If that seems a long way off, then console yourselves with the knowledge that:
a) One song will appear on the 12XU label sampler album, '12004XU', out in April
b) We'll also have an mp3 or two for you to sample at this site nearer the time
c) It's really good, so it'll be worth the wait
The album is being recorded at Gravity Shack Studios in Tooting with Pat Collier. It will be mixed in Austin by Jim Eno.
